  1. Can the Denon or other mid-range AVR sense AirPlay and automatically switch to the right settings and then return to home theater surround when AirPlay stops? I want it to be as easy as possible for my wife to use without using any of the buttons on the front, remotes, or smartphone apps?

    My Onkyo TX-DS595 lacks AirPlay and these auto-sense features and is crapping out. Living room has 5.1 surround with PolkAudio & Bose speakers, and 4 sets of in-wall speakers are dispersed elsewhere in our modest 2,400 sq.ft. home through a Niles HDL-6 speaker selection system.

    It sure would be nice to start music on my Mac, iPhone or iPad from the home office and just have it start playing through the wall speakers without having to first get up to put the AVR in the right mode. My wife currently plays her music through the phone’s speakers (yech). Please let me know if this is possible and how it works. Thanks.

  2. Hi Wayne,

    Yes, the Denon AVR-S710W supports AirPlay. However it is not as easy as you expect it to be (without touching buttons and apps), but can be mastered within first use of 15-20 minutes.

    Here’s the simple method;

    Keep the “Network Control” in “Always On” mode, this will make the device consume more standby power, but avoids manual OFF/ON.

    Install iTunes 10, or later, on your Apple products and connect to the same network as this device. (One time)

    Turn down the volume in your Max or Apple smartphones before streaming, as the audio source controls the initial volume.

    Start iTunes and click the AirPlay icon to select the main unit.

    Choose the track to stream on the unit.

    Give rest to phone’s speaker and enjoy incredible audio experience, It is as simple as that.

    Thanks and stay connected (Like and Share on FB) for News on latest product launches.

  3. Thanks, Mark, for your response. It seems that the Denon AVR-S710W may not have the ease of use that I’m looking for. Do you know of an alternative? Here’s what I want to do.

    SCENARIO: We’re outside on the deck with company and decide to listen to music over the outside speakers. Without getting up or leaving the guests, we want to start playing music from the iPhone by first selecting the AirPlay target and then proceeding as normal. Select albums, tracks & playlists from the phone, and control volume from the phone. No need to get up to touch the AVR or remote.

    This same scenario applies to other rooms in the house, such as the home office, which also has hard-wired speakers.

  4. Hi Wayne,

    AVR-S710W meets your need. You don’t have to get up from chair or manually press any buttons on the AVR or search for a remote. All you have to do is to set the “Network Control” in “Always On” mode on the system.

    The unit will be on sleep mode when no media is being streamed and starts playback automatically when you start iTunes and click the AirPlay icon on your phone.
